De iconische wolharige mammoet (Mammuthus primigenius) blijft meer dan 200 jaar na zijn eerste beschrijving nog steeds tot de verbeelding spreken. Naar aanleiding van de restauratie van het iconisch skelet van de Mammoet van Dendermonde organiseren de Belgische Vereniging voor Paleontologie (BVP) en de Werkgroep Pleistocene Zoogdieren (WPZ), in samenwerking met de stad Dendermonde, een groots internationaal symposium over ‘Mammoeten en Mammoetecologie’. Op dit symposium komen de voornaamste Belgische, Nederlandse en Canadese experts samen om hun onderzoeksresultaten te delen met het grote publiek. In dit boek nemen we de lezer mee op reis naar het ijstijdvak en laten we hen kennis maken met de verschillende facetten van het paleontologisch onderzoek. We hopen alvast dat dit boek zal bijdragen tot een betere beeldvorming over deze wonderlijke dieren en hun leefomgeving.

The iconic woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) continues to appeal to the imagination more than 200 years after its first description. Following up on the restoration of the iconic skeleton of the Dendermonde mammoth, the Belgian Paleontological Association (BVP), the “Werkgroep Pleistocene Zoogdieren” (WPZ) and the city of Dendermonde organise a major international symposium on ‘Mammoths and Mammoth ecology’. This symposium brings together the most important Belgian, Dutch and Canadian experts who will gladly share their research with the public. In this book we take the reader on a journey through the ice age, while introducing the many different facets of paleontological research. We hope that this book will contribute to a better understanding of mammoths and their natural environment.
